Meeting Scheduled For November18
I am happy to announce that the society has found a place to hold their meetings in Winchester. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4379 have allowed us to use their facilities. We will meet there on the 18th of November at 7:00 P.M. A map is enclosed to all the members on how to reach the post. If you have any questions call (909) 926-4039. We would like to thank the V.F.W. for their gracious offer.
Society Receives Unique Donation
This past month we received a nice donation to the Society. The gift was one we had never thought of but was much needed. Anita Southwick, a John Patterson descendant, sent us two books of stamps. We were pleasantly surprised and very quickly noted she
had covered a whole issues mailing cost. Thank you Anita for your
generous gift.
THANKSGIVING
What was it like in the 1890's?
DATELINE: Winchester November 1890 . . . The smell of roasting turkey and game fills the air. Chores and a church service at the Methodist church completed. Fresh bread baked. Assorted vegetables cooking on the wood burning stove in the kitchen. The
family members gathered around telling stories, waiting for the meal to be served. The ladies all in the kitchen chatting and helping the cook(?). Soon all will gather at the table to say grace and thank their God for the bountiful year they have experienced. Flowers adorn the table with platters and bowls filled high with food. Yams, potatoes,
turkey, stuffing, bread, and pies to the side. Families eating till they are the ones stuffed.
I, your humble editor, wonders, was this the way it was in 1890.
LOOKING BACK IN TIME
06-12-1890 The Ladies Aid Society gave a dime social, last evening, at the hotel.
06-12-1890 On account of Rev. Souden and others attending the dedication in Florida (Valle Vista), last Sunday was a quiet church going day here.
06-12-1890 A. Domenigoni shipped a carload of new barley last week, which for volunteer, is a good sample for the San Jacinto Valley.
06-12-1890 We are notified of an election, to be held on the twenty eight of this month, to vote for or against a special school tax of six hundred dollars.
