PLOUGHSHARE & PRUNING HOOK
WINCHESTER HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PLEASANT VALLEY

Open House Enjoyed By All Who Attended
Patterson House Open House Brings Back Memories
The monthly meeting of the historical society was held at the Patterson House, located at Grand and Patterson Avenues. Old time residents and local residents enjoyed a warm evening, exchanging stories and learning the history of the old house. Many stories filled the air of visits that some had with Tilla Patterson Hudson when she lived here. Hopefully we can open the house more often in the near future. We are still trying to find someone to give us a quotation on a new roof we desperately need to keep the rain out. If you know a licensed roofing contractor please call us at (909) 926-4039

SEPTEMBER MEETING CANCELED
Due to fact that we have no current place to meet and because the publisher of this newsletter is busy moving there will be no meeting in September. We are in hopes of having these problems resolved by October. Watch for the October  PLOUGHSHARE & PRUNING HOOK for details.

FIRE BURNS IN AUNT MANDYS CANYON
This fire season has seen some near disasters to historical buildings in Winchester. The first fire burned near the old Loretta Young place and now the Double Butte area has recently burned. We are pleased to announce that it appears that no damage was done to the old Haslam/Carpenter place located east of the landfill. Please everyone lets all help our gallant fire people by watching how we handle flammable products.

AS PROMISED A RECIPE FOR SWEETPOTATOES
Do not seem as sweet as those blue veined baskets full from the little sandy truck patch at the bottom of the hill, away back in the good old Hoosier State. So when I have "China" potatoes are put on par boil, a spoonful or two of brown sugar is thrown in the kettle. When just tender enough to be pierced by a fork; split in half, lay them in a pan, and bake with a quick fire.

TIDBITS FROM HISTORY

05/15/1890 One of our citizens while rabbit hunting in town, last week, shot at one of those animals and the blacksmiths shop being in range some of the shot went in the open door way and very near contacted with our manipulator of metals who was then at work there.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY STILL HOMELESS, OCTOBER MEETING CANCELED

Because a place for our group to meet in Winchester has not been found, we are reluctantly canceling our October meeting. We hope that we will find a new place by November. The group meets every 3rd Monday of the month and the attendance is usually less than 15 people.

                            THERE IS HOPE FOR AMERICA
The San Jacinto School District called me recently to be a substitute custodian for a week at Park Hill Elementary. Here I found a dedicated staff of teachers, volunteers, and other personal working hard to teach an eager group of young children. Led by a gentleman by the name of Mr. Soto they cope daily with over crowded classrooms, and not enough staff to teach our future leaders. The regular custodian left instructions for me which made my life easier. One of his instructions was to "have Fun." I did have a lot of fun along with some sore muscles.
I urge you all that the next time you think our country is doomed
that you go visit your local school and see what is happening there, or better yet get INVOLVED!
